Wimbledon favourites claim the Ladies and Mens Titles

The bookmaker’s favourites Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams claimed the Wimbledon titles over the weekend. Djokovic’s win was his third at Wimbledon whilst Williams won her sixth Wimbledon Championship and she surely must now go down as one of the best female players of all time.

Williams now holds all four Grand Slams and she is only one Grand Slam behind Steffi Graf and only three behind Margaret Court. On Saturday she defeated Spain’s Garbine Muguruza in straight sets and it would be no surprise if she was crowned champion in 2016. Her biggest scare this year probably came from Britain’s Heather Watson who ran her really close in three sets and was even serving for the match at one stage.

In the Men’s Final Novak Djokovic was the deserved winner over seven time champion Roger Federer. Federer came up guns blazing and broke the Serb early on but Djokovic broke back immediately and then easily won the tie break. Federer bounced back and won the second set tie break but Djokovic won the third and fourth sets and never looked in trouble. Djokovic is only twenty eight and should be at his peak now which doesn’t bode well for his rivals. John McEnroe today said he was one of the best five players of all time alongside which is quite some accolade; the other four are Federer, Nadal, Sampras and Laver.

Although Federer lost and is now only a couple of weeks away from his thirty fourth birthday he did play some great tennis over the two weeks and his semi-final victory over Andy Murray was probably one of the best games of grass court tennis he has ever played. Although he hasn’t won a Grand Slam for three years he is playing well and I imagine he will start the US Open as second favourite.

Martina Hingis, who first played at Wimbledon around twenty years ago, won the Ladies Doubles with Sania Mirza and the Mixed Doubles with forty two year old Leander Paes.
