There was a surprise winner in the Men’s French Open Final in Paris at the weekend when Switzerland’s Stan Wawrinka beat the red hot favourite Novak Djokovic in four sets which denied Djokovic his first title on the clay in Paris.

It was Wawrinka’s second Grand Slam after his win at the Australian Open last year and he will be entering Wimbledon later this month with some much needed confidence especially as he hasn’t fared well on the grass in SW19 over the last few years.

What made the victory even more surprising was that Djokovic took the first set and looked in control before Wawrinka seemed to raise his game a few levels and played some fantastic tennis in the next three sets and he ended up winning comfortably.

He also beat his compatriot Roger Federer in the earlier rounds and will he now be the man to threaten the so called big four of the Men’s game, Novak Djokovic, Rafael Nadal, Roger Federer and Andy Murray. He has reached the quarter final or further in five of the last six Grand Slam’s so is showing the consistency he has lacked in previous years.

As for Djokovic this might prove a tough loss to take as he may not have a better chance to win the French Open but being the professional he is he will regroup and will start Wimbledon as the favourite.

In the Ladies final in Paris an injury ridden Serena Williams beat Safarova in three sets adding another Grand Slam to her collection, she surely must be one of the best ever women to grace the game and it will be no surprise if in a months’ time she is holding the Wimbledon trophy aloft.
