Most memorable Wimbledon Finals

There have been some great Men’s and Ladies Wimbledon Finals over the years and picking the best few has been hard work but we think the finals below have provided the most excitement and heartache.

Rafael Nadal v Roger Federer in 2008

This final is probably the best match of tennis ever played at the All England Club featuring the two best players in the world who were in their peak years. Before this final begun they had won fourteen out of the last sixteen Grand Slams between them.

The final was a classic with some incredible levels of tennis being played by both players before Nadal won in five sets in just under five hours. The game finished in near darkness with Federer saying he could barely see Nadal at the end.

Federer only converted one of his thirteen break points he had on Nadal’s serve which proved a decisive factor.

Venus Williams v Lindsay Davenport 2005

Many Ladies matches these days last less than an hour but this enthralling final between two of the tour’s biggest hitters lasted just under three hours with Williams winning the decisive last set 9-7.

Davenport was the number one ranked player coming into the tournament and Williams had struggled for form which saw her ranking fall to number sixteen but she showed all her battling qualities, saving a match point in the process, and came up on top in an enthralling final.

Goran Ivanisevic v Pat Rafter 2001

This final, played by two of the most popular players on the tour, was an epic five set affair with the unseeded Ivanisevic beating Australia’s Rafter nine games to seven in the final set.

The atmosphere in this final was probably the best it has ever been mainly due to the fact that the match took place on the Monday which enabled 10,000 tennis fans to watch the match with people camping overnight to grab that all important ticket.

Obviously the three finals above are just our personal opinion, if you have a favourite final do let us know.
