Facts About Andy Murray

This week’s blog is all about Andy Murray and a few stats that you may or not know about Britain’s number one tennis player.

  • Andy was born on the 15th May in 1987 in Glasgow in Scotland into a tennis playing family
  • He started playing tennis from the age of three
  • At fifteen he moved to Barcelona and was coached at the Sanchez-Casal Academy where he formed a friendship amongst Rafael Nadal amongst others
  • He won the US Open title in 2004
  • He turned professional in 2005
  • He has had six coaches in his professional career – Mark Petchey, Brad Gilbert, Miles MacLagan, Alex Corretja, Ivan Lendl and is currently coached by Amelie Mauresmo
  • He has won thirty one career titles
  • He stands six foot three tall
  • His brother Jamie is also a professional tennis player although specialises in doubles
  • He is engaged to Kim Sears who is the daughter of ex player Nigel Sears
  • He has won over thirty five million US dollars in prize money
  • He reached number two in August 2009
  • He has won two Grand Slams – the US Open title in 2012 and Wimbledon in 2013
  • He won the Olympic Gold medal in 2012
  • He has appeared in four Australian Open finals but has ended up the runner up each year
  • His main sponsors are Adidas, Royal Bank of Scotland, Rado and Highland Spring
  • He supports several charities including Malaria No More UK, Rally Against Cancer and in 2014, as a result of his charity work, he received the Arthur Ashe Humanitarian of the year award
  • He has one of the best two handed backhands and lobs in the game
