After a compelling two weeks Novak Djokovic and Serena Williams took the men’s and ladies crowns at Flinders Park in Melbourne.
Serena Williams defeated Maria Sharapova in straight sets and has defeated her in sixteen of the eighteen times they have played each other. This Grand Slam win also lifted her to nineteen Grand Slam wins which is only a couple short of Steffi Graf.
In the Men’s final Novak Djokovic proved too strong for Britain’s Andy Murray and defeated him in four sets. Djokovic had some problems with his thumb and ankle in the final and Andy Murray admitted he got distracted by these and was frustrated that it let them bother him. However after a disappointing 2014 he can be pleased by his start to 2015 and will be looking forward to the French Open and Wimbledon with renewed confidence.
There were a couple of shock results in the tournament with Roger Federer, who had won a title in Brisbane the previous week, losing to Andreas Seppi in the third round and Tomas Berdych beat Rafael Nadal in the quarter final. Berdych had previously lost each of his previous matches against Nadal. The biggest shock in the ladies draw was when American teenager Madison Keys beat number four seed and two times Wimbledon Champion, Petra Kvitova.
In the other finals, Simeone Bolelli and Fabio Fognini beat Pierre-Hugues Herbet and Nicolas Mahut in the Men’s doubles, in the Women’s doubles Bethanie Mattek-Sands and Lucie Safarova beat Chang Yung-Jan and Zheng Jie and in the mixed doubles Martina Hingis and Leander Paes beat Kristina Mladenovic and Daniel Nestor.
We hope you enjoyed the Australian Open and if you want to go to the French Open and Wimbledon do get in touch.
