The first Grand Slam of 2017 starts on Monday in Melbourne in what could be a good year for Britain’s Andy Murray who has performed well in Australia before. His main rivals have had an indifferent last six months or so with Federer and Nadal both being injured and Djokovic struggling for form.

Murray has been a finalist five times but has never won the title having lost to Djokovic and Federer who are two of the best players ever to pick up a racket however he will be confident of winning his first major crown this month.

The draw has been relatively kind to him although there is the prospect of facing Federer in the last sixteen which should be an enthralling match if they both get that far.

It’s not just Andy Murray who will be flying Great Britain’s flag as Kyle Edmund, Dan Evans and Aljaz Bedene have all qualified too.

In the Ladies competition the two favourites are Serena Williams, who will be looking to win a record 23rd Grand Slam which will put her one ahead of Steffi Graf, and Angelique Kerber however Great Britain has a strong contender is Johanna Konta who is seeded ninth and is playing some of her best test of her career at the moment. She is joined in the draw by fellow Britons Naomi Broady and Heather Watson.
