Novak Djokovic moved closer to Roger Federer and Rafael Nadal’s Grand Slam totals with a convincing display at the Australian Open where he won his eighth Australian Open title which is a record.
In the final he defeated Austria’s Dominic Thiem in five sets despite being two sets to one down and is now just three grand slams behind Federer and two behind Nadal. The victory also resulted in him becoming world number one again. Thiem will see it as another missed opportunity, this was his third Grand Slam final and third defeat.
In the Ladies tournament Serena Williams again failed to win her record 24th Grand Slam and still trails Margaret Court by one Grand Slam. The final was won by USA’s Sofia Kenin, which was her first Grand Slam title, who defeated Garbine Muguruza. Kenin’s victory saw her double her career prize money to close to US$ 6 million. This year should be a competitive year in ladies grand slam tennis with the emergence of a new generation of fine tennis players including Ashleigh Barty, Naomi Osaka, Bianca Andreescu, Belinda Bencic and Jelena Ostapenko.
The next Grand Slam, the French Open, is played on the clay in Paris and will be the first year the Philippe Chatrier court is covered which will be a relief to the players especially after last year when so much tennis was lost to the rain. Rafael Nadal will be favourite for the Men’s title, but the Ladies title is tough to pick especially with these new up and coming players. We have a range of official French Open packages, please contact us for details.
Attention then turns to Wimbledon and we have a range of Hospitality and Wimbledon Debentures available for each day of the Championships. Will Andy Murray be fit this year? Will we see another great men’s final again, last year Novak Djokovic overcame Roger Federer in five sets saving two match points in the process?
