The Wimbledon Championships came to an end on Sunday and produced two memorable finals with Simona Halep winning her first title and Novak Djokovic his fifth.
Simona Halep went into Saturday’s final against Serena Williams, who could well be the best female player of all time, who was looking for her record equalling 24th Grand Slam.
Serena Williams was the bookmaker’s favourite although whether it was the pressure of the occasion or just the fact, she got out played led to Simona Halep winning the match 6-2 6-2 in under an hour.
In winning Wimbledon Simona Halep became the first Romanian to win the Ladies singles Championships and she also moved up the rankings to number four in the world, Australia’s Ash Barty, who won the French Open, remains number one.
Serena Williams in her quest to win her 24th Grand Slam has now lost her last three Grand Slam finals which has led some people to believe that she will never win that elusive record-breaking grand slam.
The Men’s final was probably the best Men’s final there has ever been at Wimbledon and was an epic five set match that was decided in a final set tiebreak for the first time.
Novak Djokovic came out on top over Roger Federer and won his sixteenth grand slam which now puts him just four behind Roger Federer.
Federer won more points in the match than Djokovic, but Djokovic won the key battles, most notably the three tie breaks. In the fifth set Federer had two match points on his own serve only to be undone by a fine Djokovic cross court winner.
For the first time in a Grand Slam final there was a tiebreak in the fifth set at twelve games all and Djokovic came out on top securing the title.
