Novak Djokovic and Naomi Osaka won the Men’s and Ladies singles championships at the Australian Open in Melbourne defeating Rafael Nadal and Petra Kvitová respectively.

The ladies final was an enthralling contest and was the first Grand Slam Final Kvitová played since she suffered from a serious injury which put her career in doubt. The victory for Osaka meant she became world number one and she is the youngest world number one since Caroline Wozniacki. The Australian Open win follows her US Open win, which was the final Grand Slam of 2018.

The men’s final, on paper, promised a classic between two of the greatest players to ever pick up a racket, Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal although sadly for the crowd and millions watching on television the match was over in just three sets with Novak Djokovic proving victorious. 

The champion played some sensational tennis and looks back to his best and he has now won the last three Grand Slams. Rafael Nadal, as he admitted in his press conference, was blown away by Djokovic and failed to add another Grand Slam to his belt which would get closer to Roger Federer’s record of twenty Grand Slams which Djokovic also has his eyes on.

Britain’s Andy Murray sadly bowed out at the first round, but he was hampered by his hip and has had more surgery which will hopefully lengthen his career.

Attention now turns to the second Grand Slam of the year in Paris, the French Open, where Rafael Nadal will be favourite again although will face strong competition from Djokovic and Roger Federer who is playing this year for the first time in three years.
